Malia is one of the most touristic resorts in Crete, located 35km east of Heraklion. It is famous for its wild nightlife and the third largest Minoan palacein Crete, Malia palace. Malia could not get developed in tourism without its sandy beaches. The beach of Malia is the eastern part of the 6km long bay starting from Stalis.

In the village of Mochos itself, you can find houses and traditional alleys which date back to the 16th century. Famous churches with old bysantine icons such as Archangel Michael, Virgin Mary (the old central church of the village, where the iconostasis dates to 1820), Saint George, Saint Panteleimon and „Evangelismos of Theotokos“ (dedicated to the Mother of Jesus) which is todays‘ central church in the square. Here you can find three Byzantine icons from the mid 15th century and a small copper icon.

Once upon the time there was a village…
Sfendili is a deserted village located in the Aposelemi Dam. After 2014 when the dam Aposelemi was ready to get the waters from Lasithi plateau, the small village Sfentili sank in the water of the Lake and emerged one year later 
.
The few residents of the village were forced to move to another
place.

Die Trockenheit des Landes brachte das versunkene Dorf wieder hervor
Einige Bewohner weigerten sich zunächst noch und klagten gegen den Bau, doch sie hatten keine Chance: 2012 wurde der Staudamm vollendet, die Wassermassen füllten den See unerbittlich und das Dorf wurde teilweise überflutet. Sfendili ist seitdem nicht mehr bewohnbar.

In dem kleinen Ort Sfendili auf Kreta lebten eins 80 Menschen. Doch dann mussten alle Bewohner ihr Dorf verlassen, weil es dem Bau eines zur Wasserversorgung notwendigen Staudamms zum Opfer fiel. Inzwischen ist das verlassene Dorf, das im Winter halb im Wasser versinkt, eine Attraktion für Touristen.

In der Odyssee werden etliche Orte Kretas angeführt. Die Höhle des Zyklopen, wo Odysseus und seine Gefährten von Polyphem gefangengenommen wurden, könnte in Sougia an der Südküste Kretas gelegen haben.
Old Byzantine icons decorate the different churches of the town. The main one located in the central square is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin and to Agia Paraskevi. This temple is home to an iconostasis of the Virgin which dates back to 1820. Here it is also possible to admire a small icon made of copper together with different wall paintings.
