I did it my way

„O Captain! My Captain!“ is a famous poem written by Walt Whitman as an elegy to honor the assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. The poem is a poignant expression of grief and admiration for the fallen leader. Its powerful and emotional words have resonated with readers for generations:

Walt Whitman greatly admired Abraham Lincoln, and wrote this poem as an ode to him after his assassination. The poem became known to an even wider audience when it was featured so prominently in the film Dead Poets Society. Robin Williams’ character taught the poem to his English class and took on the persona of “the captain”. This foreshadowed his poignant death in the novel version, and in the film, his character suffered a metaphorical death when he was blamed for the suicide of one of the students, and was terminated from his position as a teacher. Adding yet another level of poignancy, Robin Williams himself met an untimely death some years later. Life imitating art.
